Doctor Who in the 60s: We need to teach kids science while they enjoy television, so let's make sure most of our science makes sense and not make anything too outlandish.
Doctor Who in the 70s: Well, we can't be completely accurate, can we? So we'll through in a couple "reverse the polarity of the neutron flow" lines, but most of it will be sort of plausible.
Doctor Who in the 80s: We have CGI now, so does it really matter?
